I'm sitting here in the midst of a hurricane/tropical storm and I'm watching the trees sway and the winds gust. I think about the paradoxical nature of the tree and it's structure. It must be firmly rooted in the ground yet as the winds pick up it must not fight against the wind but to move with it and at a certain point it must shift back to the other side and subsequently find a it's point of balance. This process repeats throughout the storm. It must have an elasticity while also maintaining firm roots in the soil.
So when the deluge descends upon us and we are shifted to the periphery and we become aware of our imbalance we musn't fight against what nature has brought upon us. We must move with it and at a certain point the power will shift us back to the other side just before we are to break like the tree. If we can experience both sides and see them objectively as nature working out it's own course then we can then move closer to the center and achieve a period of balance. It is at the peripheral points where we become conscious of our imbalance that we choose to die. It seems that often when we fight against the nature of the cycle then nature causes our death. Nature must take over and find that balance point if we are not willing to work with it. In this sense we are thrown out of the natural cycle and forced to come back and start again at the same point. Yet if we work with the natural cycle then we can control our own death, let go and let it happen on its own. So when the hurricane or deluge comes into manifestation we can see this as a period where transcendence is possible. If we work with it then we can die within the frame of nature as opposed to being ejected. This seems to be the only way possible to move to the next octave. One needs the friction that the deluge provides to work himself back to the exalted state of oneness. Without a "body" or a substance to work in, there would be no job to be done. When functioning outside of the 'material plane' without a psyche and configuration all would be a finer degree of light. One would be in balance so what would there be to work toward?
Vitvan has a lesson on the deva line of evolution. The devas would relate to the angels in contemporary culture. Their lowest 'plane' of incarnation would the etheric world. They are seemingly still in the Father's house. They live in a realm of beauty and harmony. But because of this he says that for every 1000 years of evolution in the 'material' world it takes 10,000 years in the etheric world. So there is a balance in that. You can come in to 'material' world and feel the acute pain and suffering that this level of existence provides or you can stay in the etheric world and enjoy the harmonic frequencies. It seems to be proportional, all is perfect and in its own place.
And so I will conclude this post with a selection of text from "The Gnostic Foundations of the United States Government" by Vitvan:
"There is a cliche going around that ideas without words become sterile. The spoken or written word configurates the idea. But the word becomes sterile without works, without action, without doing. Notice the three primaries: the idea, the articulation of the idea, the configurating. There are those that just live to mentalize about doing this or that, and there are others that act so fast they look as if they never mentalize before taking action. But we must strike a harmonic balance between those three. Create an idea, articulate or express it in words, then carry it out. If you don't intend to carry an idea out, let it die. Don't verbalize about it."
Okay, final summation. Walter Russell gives us three words, RHYTHMIC BALANCED INTERCHANGE. Nature shows us how it works and we have the ability to mirror it. We don't have to be afraid of the hurricane. See it for what it is and work our way into the eye. We can only do this through functionally working our way into it. It seems best to observe it first and gain the road map but at some point we must get in the game.

Identification
This section of text comes from a book I linked to not too long ago called "Transpersonal Psychology: Transforming the Mind" (Chapter 2, pages 21-23):
"The insecurity stemming from the common cultural belief that the universe is hostile,
that we are flawed and fragile, makes identification, as an apparent shield against
change, seem tempting. But reality keeps changing - by identifying with things we
set ourselves up for eventual loss. The body gets ill, ages, eventually dies. The car
breaks down. Possessions wear out, or may get stolen. Memories fade. Many of the
things and roles you identified with were not your choices anyway - you were
cajoled and conditioned to identify with many roles, ideas, people, causes and values
that may have had no interest or were counter to your essential personality, your true
self-determinism. Identification is too automatic, too subconscious. Gurdjieff
expressed it as the fact that any one of your many identities can sign a cheque; all the
rest of you is obligated to pay, whether you/they like it or not. The person who has to
fulfil a promise may not be the same person who made the promise.
But the main cost of identification is that a conditioned system of automatically
available identities can hide you from the fact that you don't know your real identity,
the essence behind these surface manifestations. Are you really your name? Your
roles? Your feelings? Your intellectual mind? Your body? You are far more than
anything you identify with.
A person in an identity state usually does not know that it does not represent the
whole of himself - that is the horror of consensus trance. The usual range of identity
states that we function in, ordinarily called personality, was called ‘false personality’
by Gurdjieff because the identity states were forced on us in the process of
enculturation rather than by self-determined choice. The overall pattern we call
consciousness is largely consensus trance, directly analogous to post-hypnotic
suggestion in ordinary hypnosis: when the suggested/conditioned stimulus appears,
the linked behaviour, the conditioned response, the particular ‘I’ (or sub-personality)
appears.
But we are not a blank state on which culture can write as it pleases with no
consequences to us. We also have a unique genetic and spiritual endowment, which
will begin to manifest more as we grow, so we might dislike athletics and like
walking in the woods, for example, or find Shakespeare boring but enjoy writing
letters, or find physics pointless but be fascinated with maths, or search for deeper
truth despite being ridiculed by others who believe what they’re told.
Consensus trance induction does have some powerful techniques, however. Just as
we record the Parent's do’s and don’ts and our Child responses, childhood is
inevitably a process of shaping the behaviour and consciousness of the child to be
‘normal’, to fit social norms. And that inevitably involved certain aspects of your
essential personality being invalidated, neglected, denied and punished until their
external manifestations were suppressed. As an adult you would act docilely and
subserviently, and try to feel that way inside. You would tell yourself that you are a
good person, a normal person. Others would tell you, you are normal, and would
accept you as a friend, reinforcing and validating your behaviour. But inside,
something, a part of your essence, has been squashed - you may also have a vague
feeling that something isn’t right, that even though you should be happy, you don’t
feel very happy. Some of your animation, your essential energy, has been lost to the
maintenance of consensus trance. Or you may know that lots of things make you
angry but you worry - ‘Am I normal? I’m not supposed to feel like this’.
This sort of trance induction compares startlingly with conventional hypnosis. In an
ordinary induction, it is time limited, only an hour or two. In real life your parents
and your culture begin shaping your development from the moment of birth; it
involves years of repeated inductions and reinforcement of the effects of previous
inductions. Furthermore it’s intended to last for a lifetime - there is no cultural
therapist to give you the suggestion to wake up. Not until now at any rate.
In a conventional session, the subject does not expect to be bullied, threatened or
harmed in any way by the therapist, it is a voluntary relationship between consenting
adults. In the cultural situation, the power relationship between Parent and Child puts
a strong forced quality on a natural consent to learn. Parents can use physical threats
as needed, and actualise them with slaps, spankings, revocations of privileges or
confiscation of toys. Since the easiest way to act in a culturally approved way is to
feel that way inside, the fear of punishment helps structure internal mental and
emotional processes in culturally approved ways. The parents may use conditional
love and affection to manipulate, as a threat or to validate conformity. As the child
establishes social relationships with other adults and children (who also act as agents
of the culture) he learns more about how he must act to be accepted. As these
approved habits of acting become established and rewarded, they further structure
the habitual patterns of mental functioning. Fear of rejection is a powerful motivator,
because you have an inherent social instinct, a desire to belong, to be normal.
Nobody likes being thought bad, but we are invalidated in so many ways that a
general sense of unworthiness and guilt can easily be built up.
Another factor which gives this process great power, is that the mental state of a
young child leaves him very open to suggestion. In our ordinary state there is an
enormous amount of automatic association of previous knowledge to incoming
stimuli, but the child does not have much other information to come instantly to
mind, so the suggestions operate in a disassociated state, isolated from other mental
processes - a hypnotically suggestible state.
The lack of language (which increases our ability to associate information) further
contributes to the disassociated quality of the child’s mind. When we try, as adults
(predominantly verbal thinkers), to understand our enculturation and conditioning, it
is difficult to recall because much of it is not stored in verbal form.
Additionally, children have a deep trust in their parents on whom they are totally
dependent. The parent is unconscious of the cultural trance he himself is in and
simply sees himself as acting ‘naturally’. The mental, emotional and physical habits
of a lifetime are laid down while we are especially susceptible as children. They have
that compulsive quality that conditioning has; it is automatic. They may include
suggestions that block later change, that even block later hypnosis on that subject, for
example the resistance hypnotic subjects have to immoral suggestions."
When we are 'unconscious' of our motivations, we function within the framework of the race psyche. We are moved along essentially automatically by the expectations of society. We must become positive to our environment and become 'conscious' of those motivations. We must not repress those natural urges that might go against what the race expects of us and considers morally acceptable. Growing up in this Aristotelian culture where our parents taught us right vs. wrong, i.e. a two-valued system that does not fit the structure or reality, we have something to overcome (at least most of us do). Erich Fromm tells us that we live in a culture based around having as opposed to being. Our parents, mostly 'unconsciously' instilled this fear of failure and losing our possessions, the acceptance of the group, our status and so on. It takes hard work and suffering to re-imprint how we view and react to the world. Are we able to create our world or are we content reacting to stimuli and simply fitting into the mold? Can we create a world where character comes first even though our peers may not value this quality in ourselves? Two streams converging against each other. The struggle for independence from the race seeking to be an individual but fearing being cut off. What we have become being a mirror of those formative experiences we had when we could barely walk. And now to create a change, a re-orientation having to backtrack along the way and effectively alter those experiences or at least our emotional reactions to them. We must release that stored tension of the painful experiences in our lives if we are to unlock the creative energy necessary to move into higher states of consciousness. Walking the path is going against the tide, ice-skating uphill, swimming against the currents. And so we must forget the pain produced from the friction that is manifested from these two streams converging. As they say, its not about the end result but its about the journey. When one can experience those moments of seeming pain instead as moments of bliss, thou hath already attained what thou seek.

Korzybski on 'Cause and Effect'
The following quotes (mixed with some commentary in red) come from pages 216-218 (Chapter XV) of Science and Sanity by Alfred Korzybski (I have also highlighted information I personally wanted to put emphasis on and bracketed commentary within the text). It is not in the order it was written:
"The clearing up of the problems of 'cause' and 'effect' is of serious importance, because powerful semantic reactions are connected with it. To begin with, we must differentiate between the terms 'cause' and 'effect', which, linked together, imply a two-term relation nowhere to be found in this world, and thus represent a language and a two-valued 'logic' of a structure not similar to the structure of the world, and the general (infinite)-valued notion of causality. This last notion is the psycho-logical foundation of all explanations leading toward infinite valued determinism, and is an exclusive test for structure; and so of extreme semantic importance."
"The old absolute and objectified semantic attitude toward 'cause-effect' was and often is a serious hindrance in observing impartially the sequence of events (order) and relations. Preconceived notions and old semantic reactions played havoc, for it is well known that we usually find what we want to find. If we approach a problem with definite unconcious 'emotional' wants, and cannot satisfy these semantic reactions, we become bewildered, down-hearted, and perhaps utter some such non-sense as the 'finite mind', or the like. Under such semantic pressure, our power of observation and analysis is reduced by a kind of 'emotional stupor'. Such an occurrence is harmful in science and in life. 'Human knowledge' depends on human ingenuity, power of observation, power of abstraction, etc. It is an activity of the human nervous system inside of our skin and can never be the events themselves."
"Four our purpose, the most fundamental semantic application of what has been said above is in the vast field embraced by the old structural notions of 'cause' and 'effect'. These terms are of great antiquity, of a distinctly pre-scientific one-, two-valued semantic epoch. They originated in the rough experience of our race, and are firmly rooted in the habits of 'thought' and the structure of our old two-valued 'logic' and language, and because of that are even now unduly baffling. These terms, in the two-valued sense, were and are the structural assumptions of our 'private' and 'official' 'philosophies' [This sounds like what Vitvan refers to as one's 'private world']. The unenlightened use of these terms has done much to prevent the formulation of a science of man and to build up vicious anti-scientific metaphysics of various sorts involving pathological semantic reactions. With the new quantum mechanics [1933], a better understanding of these notions, based on the infinite-valued semantics of probability, becomes a paramount issue for all science. In daily life, the indiscriminate use of two-valued 'cause' and 'effect' leads structurally to a great deal of absolutism, dogmatism, and other harmful semantic disturbances, which I call confusion of orders of abstraction.
We usually follow the 'philosophers' and ascribe-or, rather feel, as conscious ascribing would not stand criticism-some mysterious structural continuity, some mysterious overlapping of 'cause' and effect'. We 'feel', and try to 'think', about 'cause and effect' as contiguous in 'time'. But 'contiguous in time' involves the impossible 'infinitesimal' of some unit of 'time'. But, since we have seen that there is no such thing, we must accept that the interval between 'cause' and 'effect' is finite. This structural fact changes the whole situation. If the interval between 'cause' and 'effect' is finite, then always something might happen between, no matter how small the interval may be. The 'same cause' would not produce the 'same effect'. The expected result would not follow. This means only that in this world, to be sure of some expected effect, requires that there must be nothing in the environment which can interfere with the process of passing from the conditions labeled 'cause' to the conditions labeled 'effect. In this world, with the structure which it has, we can never suppose that a 'cause', as we know it, is alone sufficient to produce the supposed 'effect'. When we consider the ever-changing environment, the number of possibilities increases enormously. If it were possible to take into account the whole of the environment, the probability that some event would be repeated, in all details, thus exhibiting the assumed two-valued relations of 'cause' and 'effect', which we took for granted in the old days, would practically be nil. The principle of non-elementalism, as we see, requires an infinite-valued semantics of probability."
"The clearing up of the problems of 'cause' and 'effect' is of serious importance, because powerful semantic reactions are connected with it. This last notion is the psycho-logical foundation of all explanations leading toward infinite valued determinism, and is an exclusive test for structure; and so of extreme semantic importance."
This is the first time I have been conscious of the fact that cause and effect belong to the dual-throng vocabulary. Without cause there can be no effect and thus is not similar to the structure of the world as Korzybski says. Obviously concessions must be made when we are still identified with objectivity or our consciousness has not risen to the 'higher' dimensions. I know personally, I based a lot of my studies on what I learned about cause and effect, so I believe it is essential to gaining better understanding. But it seems that we should be aware that we are using Aristotelian language even when we speak of cause and effect.
"The old absolute and objectified semantic attitude toward 'cause-effect' was and often is a serious hindrance in observing impartially the sequence of events (order) and relations. Preconceived notions and old semantic reactions played havoc, for it is well known that we usually find what we want to find. Vitvan in his teachings has provided the perfect example to get Korzybski's point across. When we stand at a certain point on a circle we can look back and we can look forward. Just as we do in our day to day lives, we find ourselves in one moment and can "view" moments from the past and "look" toward moments in the future that we hope will happen. Or we work in this moment to create a moment in the future.
Now what happens when one steps off of that circle? What is the past and what is the future? Where is the cause and where is the effect? It just is. One cannot distinguish any event from another. And so Vitvan says where one sees clearly or finds his dharma, he comes in line with Will, there is no free-will. Look at the cycle which we call birth/death. In our current state, we say that when we are conceived by our objective mother that we are "born" and when we exit this world, we "die". We don't know what happens when we die as long as we see only this half. Now imagine you have full awareness of the complete cycle. Now which one is birth and which one is death? They are interchanging one into the other. You cannot out-rightly say that one is birth and one is death. A lot of spiritualists will say that to die is to enter the "material" world and to be born is to leave the 'material body'. That takes a negative connotation, yet all is purposeful. That was a little parenthetical, but I think one can say that when one is outside of a sphere or WHOLLY 'within' it that there is no past/future, good/bad, that each point must be given the same value or weight.
Korzybski used his model which he called the Structural Differential (see right). This model details the orders
of abstractions, and also accounts for frequencies or factors that we do not register. The event is represented by E at the top and you can see the strands labeled B2. These represent those frequencies we do not register as we abstract. So we crystallize the event into an object, but along the way we must account for the factors not known to us 'consciously'. When we use the subject-predicate language structure we put stress on the nervous system because we are not representing the configuration (thing) as it is in life facts. So when you say something like, "my mom ruined my life", you are leaving out many factors and completely go against the structure of the world, i.e. the value you give is what reacts upon you. Instead you could say, "Because my mom indulged in alcohol and neglected me, I BELIEVE she has impacted my life negatively." By saying that something seems to be or that you personally believe something, you are leaving extensions, acknowledging that you could be wrong or that there could be other factors that you are not currently aware. When we leave those extensions, we do not have those emotional outbursts because we did not get what we expected as Korzybski notes in one of the paragraphs above. We left the door open, acknowledging that a situation could turn out 'negative' or 'positive' but we have the ability to react unemotionally towards it and deal with it objectively. If we remain open minded then we can expand the awareness of the situation. If we become dogmatic and identify labels as the object, we cannot grow. If I can parenthetically say, I think we shy so much away from pain that we often cannot experience true love and fulfillment. I think there is a semantic blockage that we have developed toward pain and I want to go into this more in the future for sure.

If we remain open minded then we can expand the awareness of the situation. If we become dogmatic and identify labels as the object, we cannot grow. If I can parenthetically say, I think we shy so much away from pain that we often cannot experience true love and fulfillment. I think there is a semantic blockage that we have developed toward pain and I want to go into this more in the future for sure.So we if we are open minded, we can look at many factors. Instead of simply giving in because something happened in our past, we can find the quality within us and alter the quality, not holding on, identifying with an event that happened a long time ago. A seemingly negative experience might get us to look within and change certain qualities that eventuated and when we are able to alter those qualities, we gain strength, confidence, etc. Without those events we would float through life and never lose anything but never gain anything more than they brought with them, and some do. And some will look at certain patterns that run in their families, identify them as hereditary, i.e. an 'effect' abstracted from a so called 'cause' (family disease or disorder) and so they believe they are helpless. Instead of looking at the semantic pattern that has been passed down, the physiological organism is all that is observed. "My doctor told me I have high cholesterol, it runs in my family, I'll get on medicine." So as has been said again and again, it's not the events that affect you, but the value you give to them. It's easier to look at the world as chaotic, then we don't have to take responsibility. "When I do good, nothing comes of it anyway" one might say. The problem usually is that one is conditioned to objectivity. What he wants are 'things'. Most of the time people are willing to go deep within, we only want to change the outside, make outside of the pretty and proper. But when we go inside and are willing to fight, great outcomes can happen.
We often hear about those who are stricken with cancer who do not undergo the standard treatments like chemotherapy yet their cancer "miraculously" disappears. What happens? Between the 'cause' and the 'effect' that person changed the state of their consciousness that initially created the cancer. If one changes the environment that cultivated the cancer through changing their consciousness then the cancer can no longer thrive in the environment. And that is the same concept as raising one's forces to the "higher levels". One's "house" might have been a great nesting spot for imps, devils, elementals, etc. but when that one rose his respective forces on up above the root and solar centers to the heart center and above, the elemental could not stand the light radiating out from those centers and scurries away like a cockroach.
So there is always the interval between the so called 'cause' and the 'effect'. Otherwise there would be no order and we would all be automatons. We left the Father's House for a reason, we are on the circle in our current state of consciousness. But when when we step off the circle, stop giving value, stop letting environmental factors lead us astray from our path, then we re-enter the Father's House. When the Logos becomes flesh then that interval would seemingly be gone or at least we could see both the ebb and flow. Whatever the Will desired to create would be done. Thy Will be done, not mine.

Science and Sanity
This comes from page 176 of Science and Sanity:
"It seems evident that the extroverted and introverted tendencies have some connection with extensional and intensional types of reaction; but, of course, they are not identical. They influence the individual in the selection of a profession, and in the preference for some special trend of activity. Thus, mathematicians, generally, have an inclination toward extension, 'philosophers' toward intension. Now it is interesting to note that mathematicians have a record of continuous constructive progress, and at each epoch have produced the highest kind of language known. Also, the most important achievements in the fields which traditionally belonged to 'philosophers' have actually been produced by mathematicians. The 'philosophers', in the main, have a record of failure.
The reason for this difference, which is too remarkable to be a mere coincidence, may be found by application of the term 'order' in our analysis. The extensional method is the only method which is in accordance with the structure of our nervous system as established by survival. Reversed intensional methods disorganize this normal mode of activity of the nervous system, and so lead toward nervous and 'mental' illnesses."
So I want to stop there. If you read my earlier post I was talking about some Youtube videos I was watching and how these guys seemed to abstract way out into grounds where there seemed to be no point and no referents established for many of the words. I will not post the link, as I do not want to knock them, they are trying to find their way just like anyone else and who is to say is right for another. It is only observation for learning purposes, it is not meant to look down upon. I'm sure you can find many representations if you go searching. But these particular videos I was watching happened to be created by philosophy students. And it was interesting how they were reading books about initiation and seemed to have all the pertinent information at their disposal but they didn't condense any of it, there was no seeming synthesis into a functional philosophy or "way of life", no purpose.
So what did they lack? They lacked order, no road map. Many are seeking enlightenment or expanded awareness but at some point all of this information (it is not knowledge) becomes a nemesis. We become bogged down by the sheer volume. We cannot synthesize it and make it functional, well because we mistake the mental squirrel caging for realization. But the mathematician or scientist he has the structure and so with this I think he many times mistakenly find his way into the 'higher levels'. As Korzybski says, for one to be well adjusted he should be an extroverted-introvert or introverted-extrovert. So the philosopher starts out as intensional, but to make his information functional he must become extensional. This is just like saying that we first must involve before we evolve. Nature has a periodicity to it, there are no exceptions that I can see. Or we can say that balance must always be achieved.
And so I will continue with more the text because I just think it is brilliant stuff:
"As explained before, the structure of our nervous system was established with 'senses' first, and 'mind' next. In neurological terms, the nervous impulses should be received first in the lower centres and pass on through the sub-cortical layers to the cortex, be influenced there and be transformed in the cortex by the effect of past experiences. In this transformed state they should then proceed to different destinations, as predetermined by the structure established by survival values. We know, and let us remember this, that the reversed order in semantic manifestation-namely, the projection into 'senses' of memory traces or doctrinal impulses-is against the survival structure, and hallucinations, delusions, illusions, and confusion of orders of abstractions are to be considered pathological. In a 'normal' human nervous system with survival value, the nervous impulses should not be lost in the sub-cortical layers. In such a case, the activity of our human nervous system would correspond to the activity of the less-developed nervous systems of animals which have no cortex at all. It must be remembered, also, that the sub-cortical layers which have a cortex, as in man, are quite different from corresponding layers of those animals which have never developed a cortex. It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that survival values are sharply characterized by adequacy, and that animals without cortex have nervous systems adequate for their needs under their special conditions; otherwise, they would not have survived. This applies, also, to those animals who have a cortex. Their activities for survival depend on this cortex; and when the cortex is removed, their activities become inadequate. Their sub-cortical layers alone are not adequate to insure survival. For survival, such animals must use not only their lower centres and their sub-cortical layers, but also their cortices."
So I will stop there and comment. So what Dr. Korzybski is inferring is that we humans are not using our cortex as it was meant to function and thus we on the majority are functioning like animals. This has been cultivated in the race psyche and so this is now "normal", normal in the sense that it is average. A new standard has been set. But in reality it is not "normal", we are not functioning up to the level of our capabilities. Our nervous reactions mirror those of animals. If we continue to not function correctly then we will begin to not survive. And so when I think of survival, I do not think in objective terms as in, "I'll lose my body." The average person is having his fun and drinking and being merry and does not have time to stop and analyze the situation. He can easily stop and say that there is nothing after I'm dead without further inquiry and be done with it and go on functioning like the animals. Personally, I think about the qualities I am building into my psyche. What qualities or aptitudes can I take out with me and bring back with me. And then we must remember that the world is not going to slow down or lower itself to level we decide to function on. It is non-survival.
What happens to those species in the past who lost the ability to survive? Well, they aren't around anymore. Vitvan in his book "The Deva Line of Evolution" talks about the period when the sea creatures began to evolve and leave the water and develop lungs. There was quite the struggle and many could not adjust to the new conditions. He says that those 'individual spirits' were shifted to the deva line of development, meaning that they no longer incarnated into a 'material' configuration (body). The lowest level of their development was the etheric world. They weren't extinguished, but in terms of development, being able to incarnate into these levels is a great boon to the individual. It can take 10,000 years to accomplish in the deva world what it takes 1000 years to accomplish on the configurational level, Vitvan says. That is just a practical example as to the struggle for survival and how nature does not give any slack. So this might sound like fear mongering (I hope not), but hopefully to one on the fence it might give them the motivation to seek to read Science and Sanity (among other books) and change the patterns that have been bestowed upon us due to our integration within this race psyche.
It isn't easy and in fact its probably the hardest process one could undertake, but what does anyone have to lose except maybe some pride and an ego and maybe some friends? Sure sounds like a lot to gain though. And as I've said previously, it seems as though the separation is occurring, there is societal dichotomy taking shape, so this seems to be the time to make the push forward and make sure one stays on the positive, creative side.
If you want to continue reading this section, you can pick it up on page 177.
Thanks for reading.
Edit: The more I thought about this subject, the more I felt like I missed the mark. I guess the point is that the autonomous field is the Ultimate Cause and that cause/effect is the play within that field. There is validity in tracing the causes of certain effects, but we also must account for unknown factors that we are unable to register. And once one removes himself from the rolling wheel, cause cannot be seen as happening before effect and vice versa, as the nature of reality is a spiral and not linear.

Manifestation
And this one comes from the last lesson in "Practices in Individual Development" -
"It is the state in which the Power-to-be-conscious is conscious that sets up the impulse in the substance that we call the wave and frequency. When the Power-to-be-conscious is conscious of Light, then the waves and frequencies of Light become the objective representation or the manifest representation of the state. That is so immediate in Light's Regions, so immediate, that the state on the part of the Power-to-be-conscious and the wave-frequencies and its manifestation becomes a simultaneous process in Light's Regions. When we reach even the edge of Light's Regions, to become conscious of an idea (not mental concept), to become conscious of a state that is qualified (that means idea), qualified, instantaneously it is manifest. The state, the idea, the waves-frequency-the manifestation is faster than light.
As the substance becomes gross, that is, the interstices between the units of energy or the units of light become wider and wider, i.e., grosser, coarser, it is less instantaneous. There is a lag between the state and the manifest evidence or manifestation of the state. When we come to living matter we have to dwell with an idea, that is, we dwell with the quality of feeling, the quality of desire or thought. We have to entertain it over what we call time before it begins to configurate and manifest in living matter. So the higher, the finer the substance, the higher the state, the more instantaneous it is, until it is simultaneous with the state."

A Treatise on Faith
Ending quote from the booklet "A Treatise on Faith" containing rich teachings from Vitvan:
"Whatever the immediate trials and seeming failures of your life may be, keep forever in your mind the happy consciousness that the trials, temptations, hardships, sorrows and disappointments through which your pathway leads are but the recurrences of evanescent and fleeting shadows of your past, appearing again for corrective purposes, and of themselves have no substance you need to fear. Meet them serenely and without flinching and, one by one, learn the lesson that each has come to teach, then they will vanish as the mist and the fog vanish before the dispelling power of God's beneficent sunlight.
Build you a temple in your consciousness upon the rock of faith, and by your works make your life a monument of beauty, whether the world knows and enjoys it or knows it not. This, in effect, represents the eternal as well as the universal significance of faith."

Separation/Cycle Completion
I really want to try and break down the end of cycles and the separation that occurs. As has been stated before, it seems as though we are entering the process of shifting from one cycle to the next. Vitvan confirms this saying that the Aristotelian cycle is coming to a close and that the Atomic Age is being ushered in. I can't believe in the whole 2012 thing, this is a long drawn out process, it is not an overnight occurrence. Yes, a new cycle may be coming in a higher frequencies are being experienced in the whole environment, but one must have the capabilities built in to register the higher frequencies. It seems to have nothing to do with sidereal time, it functions in harmonic time. Meaning we don't calculate based on a certain year, our years are arbitrarily created units of measurement, they have nothing to do with how the cycles are actually functioning. People are trying to measure the Mayan calendar using our Gregorian calendar. There are multiple calendars out there, and as people note all the time, there is an elite group at the top who run the show, do you think they are just going to flat out give you the esoteric doctrines out in plain view? You have to dig for it, that is why it is esoteric. One on the path seeks to get positive to the environment so he does puts less emphasis on his surroundings and more into what he can control. The Mayan calendar stuff just becomes another tool for control. When cataclysms begin to ramp up, the truthers can easily sublimate these events by saying, "well the Mayan prophecies are being fulfilled." And so population decreases occur and no one bats an eyelash because it is 'divine prophecy'. Who knows what will happen. Do you believe in gods? More power to you if it helps you through the day.
So say the shift occurs in 500 years as Vitvan estimates, this is the blink of an eye in the context of the individualization process from unicellular organism to individualized man. We don't worry about the time though and how long it will take because we are going through a natural process and will step aside and let it unfold as it will. Thy Will be done. Vitvan had something interesting to say in a lecture I was listening to the other day titled "Understanding the Psychic Nature." He asks, 'were you conscious of the process from unicellular organism up to element, to plant, animal and on to separating from the animal field'? Were you conscious of coming into this world being birthed from your mother's womb? I don't think so. So in that case the natural order process brought you forth from those stages to this point. Can you imagine that struggle? Through all of that you arrived to being conscious of your self in this moment? This is quite profound. And so after all that you are going to say, "thank you Power, I'll take over from here." Ha. Do you see how ridiculous that is?
Anyways back to the main point I want to make. So after all of this development, we are coming to a shift. After so much (relative) time of individualization for every one of us, we find that there are large gaps between humanity. And not just indigenous man vs. average American/European vs. elite world leader. When you walk down the streets, function in general society, the gaps between each of us can be separated by hundreds of thousands of years (many incarnations of development) it seems (although this seemingly can be made up quickly). You have people wholly focused in objective sense who live completely in their private worlds (personalities), wholly identified with the 'body', know nothing of, give no value to the psychic nature. 'I am body' and that is it. You have those who function a small amount in the psychic nature and it goes on up the scale to the ascended masters. Vitvan says there are 3 classes of people, 1)those wholly conditioned in objective identity, 2)those who have found the path and are in the process of becoming, 3)those who have individualized and are a Being. Hopefully you can get an idea of what I'm trying to get across, the breadth of the gaps in all of our respective consciousness. How many people do you know that you could walk up to on the street and try to explain this type of stuff to? I don't know anyone, and I don't know squat about squat, but us remember also that mentalizing about teachings is not true development. One could be completely individualized and know nothing about any esoteric teachings. The frequencies that a disciple, someone who is beginning to awaken to a more expanse world is aware are minuscule compared to the infinite frequencies that make up the whole reality. But then think about someone who only is aware to sense functions, and compare them, the gap that would be between the disciple and someone who is completely asleep. It seems profound to me. One doesn't go straight from objective identity to Being, the seed does not instantly become a flower. By and by through experience one begins to get tired of chasing chimerical dead ends and progressively comes nearer to the path.
So when you have a majority that is completely oblivious to the truth, to the purpose of the palingenetic cycle (the process of incarnating) and classes of those who are in different states of awakening, the majority becomes a nemesis to those who are awakening. They are a great source of friction or point of reference in being able to push those who try and individualize further on the path, but eventually they become a nemesis and quite detrimental. Just as one's personality is a vehicle that helps him wade through the mud and reach the path, but once he finds the path, the personality becomes his biggest enemy. So in nature there must be a separation so that the individuals functioning in the lower centers do not drag those who are evolving down. As we know there is a natural order process at work and that natural order process does not slow down for the stragglers, it does not step down to the level of those who cannot make the grade, there must be a benchmark. Just as one should not lower himself to give sympathy/pity to those who wallow in the senses, shift back and forth and suffer. Ayn Rand would call this self suicide and is detrimental to one's self and the whole. At some point it must cast those out and let them repeat that cycle because they could not make the grade. Look at how our schools are set up, they mirror the natural order process. Look at how our 'body' works, we take in elements, energy, food and build up the body as we desire and that energy that is not usable is cast out. So if there are those who no longer serve the purpose of the natural order process, who cannot keep up with the life wave, then they must be left behind and start again in more favorable conditions.
And so I personally love to make the correlation between the natural order process on an individual level and how Walter Russell has described the process of the creation of our solar system. He says that when the sun becomes an individualized center, it casts out all of the lower vibrating frequencies/entities. The planets are those lower vibrating beings. And they house lower level individualizing beings that resonate with the frequency of the planet's overall field. Just like we function in our respective race psyche, be it America, Russia, Africa, etc. And we can abstract further down into the states with in those countries, down on to the cities, and so on. So to be the sun it had to cast out the lower frequencies because it could not become the sun while housing those lower vibrating forces. I've seen the planets correlated with the chakras. The chakras are an extension of the inherent Power than animates us, they are the power separated and function at lower frequencies. The planets are an extension of the sun, and they all vibrate at a lower rate consummate to their point of development.
Now lets segue into Vitvan's teaching of the birth of the Christos. On the journey toward Mind level we have the baptism by water. This is where we begin to function in frequency as opposed to objective identity. John the Baptist is a representation of this process and he says, 'lay the way, for there is one greater that shall come after me'. After the baptism of water comes the baptism of fire. At this point the Christos power comes in and says, 'I come not to bring peace but to bring a sword' and 'an axe must be laid at the root of every tree not planted by my Father (those lower level entities/frequencies that are not natural to the cosmic process). Meaning that to ascend to the higher level, become the sun or rise to the Mind level (the birth of the Christos), the lower frequencies must be cast out. When one becomes pure again then he has completed the cycle, ascended to the next highest level of the spiral, the relatively higher sphere.
So you have many people who will believe that this predicted occurrence coming in 2012 will evolve their consciousness. That because the earth's frequencies will be evolved (in theory) that they too will experience these frequencies. Well it seems apparent now that this is not true to the natural order process, though the earth's frequencies may be raised and thus there will be more opportunity for us to tune into those frequencies. We must first individualize, work for our salvation, experience the baptism of water before we can die to self or experience the re-birth into the higher spheres. We must first 'come out from among them and be ye therefore separate'. And then all of our lower qualities must be expurgated. This is quite the process that Vitvan describes, it is not all peace and love, but it is going to be a battle, a fight to the death..the death of the personality. One cannot bring the personality along into the higher spheres. So I personally hear a bunch of the new age gurus who obviously still function in the personality who believe that because they are mentally awake to a shift in cycles that they have ascended. And they reify words like divine and God, soul, etc. and generally have no clue what they are talking about. And they suffer and think that this is part of their ascension. Because they suffer that they are 'chosen'. I guess the only hope is that the desire to know will lead them towards the natural order process that is going on. That simply mentalizing about consciousness expansion is not the actual function that brings about the expansion. And I do not condemn, I try only to observe and see the errors that I have made along with them and try to learn from them.
And so we either cooperate with the process and we move on or we work against and the reflection that is created, the imbalance will force us to shift and seek the middle path, to find the balance that is the natural order process, to FUNCTION IN THE POWER, AS THE POWER, not an extension of the power as the personality is. Enter into that power, go inside, not the 'body' but the consciousness that the body is in, that the psyche is in, the autonomous field.

Korzybski on Infantilism
In this post I will quote a rather large section of text from Alfred Korzybski's book "Science and Sanity." The selection comes from Chapter XXX. It deals with infantilism in individual adults and in nations. Korzybski notes that a lot of the information came from Dr. Joseph Collins' book "The Doctor Looks at Love and Life." I found it magnificent how spot on this analysis is. It holds true in my view in the AVERAGE individual at least in the US. These are the conditions permeating the race psyche. You can look at it from the struggle of the individual to individualize and the fear that comes along with being isolated.
I have put my commentary in brackets and bolded where I wanted to emphasize a point. And so now onto the text:
"Children and idiots live in the present only and do not concern themselves with the past and the future beyond their immediate gratification. Infantile types also want all the 'sense' enjoyment of the moment, never enquiring about the sufferings of others or of the consequences for themselves in the future. Indeed their attitude is often hostile toward those who take into consideration a larger sphere...On national and commercial grounds, they devastate their natural resource, since they are interested on ly in some immediate and selfish advantage. They love praise and hate blame, not realizing that a critical attitude gives the foundation for proper evaluation and becomes a semantic characteristic of maturity and that, generally, it is more beneficial in the long run. They thrive and thrill on commendations and compliments, and shiver and shrink at disapproval. Such characteristics are found even in whole nations [Remember nationalism represents the individualizing process in a larger field]. They are self-satisfied, and keep aloof from others in international affairs, not realizing that this is impossible, and that the attempt is ultimately harmful to them. They assume, as an excuse, the superiority of their institutions, and the 'righteousness' of their own conduct.
Children and superior idiots appreciate resemblances more readily than differences. Simple generalizations are possible, but often they are hasty and faulty. A child's pride and self-respect are hurt if he is considered different from other children, or is dressed differently. Originality and individuality are tabooed among children. Because of semantic undevelopment, differences become a disburbing factor to them; they want everything standardized. On national grounds, the adult infants standardize all they can and have even a kind of hostility to anything which has an individual flavour. For instance, those who wear straw hats after an arbitrary date are attacked on the streets. Not want to 'think', or to bother about differences, they fancy that they can regulate life by legislation and they keep busy manufacturing 'laws', which are very often impracticable and self-contradictory. When they pass several thousand 'laws' a year, these become a maze and a joke. The ultimate semantic result of such over-legislation is a complete lack of justice or of any respect for 'law'. Not being able to 'think' for themselves, they leave that bothersome function to politicians, priests, newspapermen, (etc.). Under such conditions life is impossible without expensive lawyers.
Not having the critical semantic capacity for proper evaluation, their likes and dislikes are very intense. They cannot differentiate the essential from unimportant. The immediate 'sense' perception or 'emotion' unduly influences their actions. Impulses to copy others dominate them. They are often prejudiced. This results in weak judgement, over-suggestiveness, 'emotional' outbreaks, exaggerated sensibility, variability of affective states, (etc.), and, finally, in an attitude toward life devoid of proper evaluation [This is the goal, we are not chastising, but we want understanding above all]. Their moods are changable; their attention readily gained and as readily diverted. They become easily intimidated and frightened, and easily influenced by others.
The above semantic characteristics are sponsored by commercialism, and build up the kind of methods, advertisements, and business policies which we see about us [Mind you this was in 1933 when he wrote this!]. This also introduces a semantic factor of disintegration into human relationships, as it leads to methods of trickery, to 'putting something over' on the other fellow, and appeals to self-indulgence,. When such commercial tactics are national, their sinister educational effect is pronounced. Children, from the age when they begin to read, are impressed by such practices as normal and take them as semantic standards for their own further orientations. Unfotunately, even psychiatrists have not, as yet, analysed the semantic influence of such advertisements on the building and preseving of infantile characteristics.
Children lack moderation and a semantic sense of proper evaluation. Tolerance is not one of their characteristics. To them persons and 'ideas' are evaluated in extremes, either good, 'wonderful', or bad, 'terrible'. Their s.r. appear dogmatic and stubborn, as in all the unexperienced. They talk to much or are silent; they praise to much or blame too much; they work too hard or play too hard, and know no middle ground. The whole life of a nation may be coloured by such semantic attitudes. Nations become boastful of their own possessions and achievements [USA! USA! USA!], and happily borrow and forget the achievements of others. They pride themselves on having the largest airships, the largest cities, the highest buildings, the longest bridges, (etc.) [Additive vs. Non-Additive culture]. They know no moderation in food or drink; they eat or drink too much or become total 'prohibitionists' [Did I mention this was written in 1933?]. They exhibit quick friendships and quick dislikes. They are solemn in their games, like children who are playing father and mother, and make out of games a national event. The childish pleasure of defeating an adversary accounts for national crazes, like racing boxing, football, baseball, and similar sports, which often overshadow in public attention all really important issues.
Children and many idiots are incapable of any choice which involves meanings and evaluation. When confronted with a situation in which they have to choose between two alternatives, they have difficulties, and often want both. Similarly with 'ideas'; they often keep sets of entirely self-contradictory 'ideas'. Even scientist of an infantile type do so, and then publish 'manifestos' in which they try to justify such behavior and semantic attitudes. Merchants train salesmen especially to induce customers with such infantile s.r [semantic reactions] to buy what they do not need. This attitude is often extended in marriage. Any man and woman may marry simply because they come across each other; then, when they meet somebody else, they soon change the object of their sentiments.
All classes of feeble-minded and children show marked credulity; they like fairy tales and fantastic stories [see: Hollywood films of today]. Free inventions, by a process of objectification, are taken as experience. Children and schizophrenics pun and play on words. They build up language of their own. Perseveration and sterotypy in speech are also found among them. National commercialism utilizes this principle in advertisements and tries to run a country by verbal slogans and play on words.
Many children and feeble-minded show distinct acquisitiveness. Like some animals, they show a tendency for collection of objects, and value their collections highly. It is a well-known childish game to claim the best morsel of some food because one has put one's hand on it first. Acquisitiveness is made a national slogan and proclaimed a highest aim, which, of course, becomes a semantic source of endless wars and miseries. Infantile legalistic 'putting hands first', on piece of paper as title to land, or some such similar form of a 'claim', becomes a source of ridiculous fortunes for the few and of unbearable life-conditions for the many.
Children are gregarious and afraid to be alone. Similar tendencies are carried on by Rotary and other clubs and lodges. Infantile grown-ups are too empty in their heads to desire to be alone. Children seldom stick to anything for long. They hunt for new excitements, and the old toys are often soon forgotten. Similarly, grown-up infants hunt for new excitements, for new toys, whether they be a house or an automobile, a wife or a lover.
In children and the feeble-minded, we seldom find such feelings as shame, aesthetic sentiments, or appreciation of beauty. They like things bizarre, grotesque, glittering, and enormous things which attract and hold their attention. Similar characteristics are found in incomplete adults. Children and the feeble-minded are usually untidy and noisy. Visiting a public park, or witnessing a 'celebration', will show an observer clearly how infantile grown-ups behave.
Children like to domineer over their younger brothers and sisters and to play the leading part in a game. Similar semantic characteristics are carried into adult life, sometimes taking the form of sadism. We often see infantile docility or resentment, as expressed in sentimental approval or bitter disillusionment, both generally unjustified.
Self-respect is little developed in the idiot, but plays an important semantic role in the life of imbeciles and children. The infantile adult also shows an exaggerated self-respect. Bus conductor and university professors label themselves with a title-even if it is only 'Mr.' John Smith, as if being called simply 'John Smith' would be offensive to him. An adult evaluates a man by what he has in his head or character, but the infantile type largely judges him by the symbols (money) which he has, or the kind of hat or clothes he wears. Since commercialism cannot sell brains, but can sell trousers or a dress, it establishes semantic standards whereby a man is evaluated by his clothes and hats.
In speaking of exaggerated self-regard based on improper self-evaluation, we touch the problem of infantile self-love and self-importance. Infantile grown-ups carry these even further, and are unable to make dependable attachment to others. The love of parents toward their child is largely because it is their child; and infantile A 'loves' B, only because B 'adores' A and gives up his individuality. The moment something changes in B, all the 'love' A had disappears [ie. it was not love because conditions were set up. It was based on what A could get, it was not selfless]. The unbelievable bitterness which appears in divorce-court scenes show clearly the value of infantile 'love'. Such 'love' is often based on purely egoistic grounds. They 'love' what they represent to themselves, what they once represented, what they would like to represent. Infantile parents see all kinds of perfections in their babies, although a sober outsider does not share these opinions. An infantile mother treats her child like a doll, plays and is thrilled with it, but soon gets tired as the responsibilities become irksome. An infantile father sees in the child, first, a toy, and, later, a nuisance.
Infantile adults have little regard for, or endurance of, life responsibilities. They tire quickly, are easily discouraged and frightened. They are thus irresponsible, unreliable, and a source of suffering for those connected with, or dependent on, them. This permanent suspense for others produces, perhaps, one of the most serious sources of worries and unhappiness. Since it is persistent, it gives continual, painful nervous shocks, the cumulative effect which is bound to be harmful.
The infantile individual himself cannot fail to notice that something is wrong, for life makes him quickly aware of it. But, in his self-love, exaggerated self-esteem., he overlooks his own shortcomings, and blames everybody and everything but himself. In the face of 'injustice', he becomes discouraged, timed, or bitter and pessimistic. He is unable to discharge his duties, and becomes a disappointment as a father, husband, friend, and, ultimately, as a human being and citizen. Bitterness, disappointment, and painful semantic shocks pile up on all sides under such conditions [Vitvan would say that due to the repression of the libido or power to be conscious, the natural desires on their respective levels, an individual turns negative and love becomes hate, the world turns dark and this is projected out into the 'objective' world].
One of the most important characteristics of infantilism of all degrees takes the form of exhibitionism, an impulse for showing off, even by crude display of himself, his body, etc. This tendency is very common, and leads to many results of a very undesirable social character. Infantile men and women are primarily in love with themselves and care only how pretty they are. They spend large portions of their income and life on dresses and groom, which, of course, have no social value. Such types live in an infantile world and are socially useless, often parasitic on the social body. Often those who support them ruin their lives to satisfy these infantile semantic characteristics."

Okay so this section on infantilism goes on for a few more pages. I think I hit the real heavy parts, if I have time to type more I will, or if I find a section that I feel that I can't leave out I will add it. If you are so inclined to read it yourself, here is the link: http://esgs.free.fr/uk/art/sands.htm. It is some heavy hitting text. I must say that most of the people that I know personally would be considered infantile, and I can honestly say that I grew up with a lot of the infantile characteristics and am still trying to get rid of some. I think the key is to understand the structure, and to not shrink away from the criticism. When you become timid and block out reality you fall back in the infantile cocoon.
Another point that I took from reading this section, was how society was just as imbalanced in Korzybski's time as it is today. I think that only today because of the internet and 'social media connections' that it is more on display for one to observe. It becomes magnified, and there are many more people. So it seems as though the percentage of infantile people is not far off from the early 1900's. We are still in the jungle - selfish and out to get what we can get. I find this text to be a great boon - to be able to have someone to concisely put all of this together in an easy to understand manner. And if it stings while reading some of it, well look deeper and find out why it stings. Accept and appreciate the pain, don't shy away, that is how I feel about it. As far as I am concerned, this is a great time to be incarnated - the incredible friction that comes with having all of these people who fear being separated from the group that will fight against you as you leave their herd, what a boon. After waking up to reality, there is no way to live that way and be happy, so might as well fight against it and struggle for the pearl of great price. That friction, that duality will push you right on up.
That's all I have for now. God Bless.

The Case of Flying Saucers by Manly P. Hall
Below is an article from the Philosophical Research Society's website (http://www.manlyphall.org/text/the-case-of-the-flying-saucers/) taken from a lecture by Manly P. Hall.
THE CASE OF THE FLYING SAUCERS

This morning our purpose is to analyze certain aspects of the human mind in connection with the mysterious case of the Flying Saucers. First of all I would like to create a little parallel, something that will help folks to see just what we are up against in a matter of this kind. Quite a number of years ago a famous stage magician by the name of Harry Keller created a strange illusion, he perfected in stage magic the Illusion of levitation. Keller, who was a very able exponent of the art of conjuring, worked out a method by the means of which the human body could be suspended in the middle of a well lighted stage without any visible means of support. He was able to so project it that a committee, honestly chosen from the audience could walk around the stage and even could walk under the floating body. Of course, in those days legerdemain was one of the principal forms of entertainment. It has failed in popularity because folks of our generation are insulted rather than amused when they are fooled. Keller gave his professional secret, the mystery of the floating lady, to Howard Thurston, who exhibited it to the public throughout his life. In order to add glamour to the spectacle, the scene was decked in Oriental splendor, like the Arabian Nights, which brought to the mind of the beholder the wonderful story of the magic of the East, all of which contributed to the disorientation of his judgment, which was the necessary ingredient of such entertainment.
After watching this illusion a number of times from the audience, I used to listen to the explanations that were given. Those present knew in their common mind that it was a trick of some kind. The majority of these audiences assumed that and were not profoundly shaken in their judgment even though completely deceived by their eyes, which proved definitely that you cannot always believe what you see. There were, however, in such groups several classes of people, and there was always that little group interested in Eastern mysticism, which would have been willing to die to defend the belief that the lady actually floated, that it was done by a secret formula right out of the Arabian Nights. Nothing could have convinced them to the contrary.
Then there was another group semantically addicted to the belief that conjurers and mirrors were always associated. When you do not know how it is done, it is done by mirrors. So another group was very smug, happy and wise and knew all about it, it was done with mirrors. Having decided that, they gained proper distinction in their own eyes and among their associates and they were ready to enjoy the performance. There was another group with a more scientific type of mind. This group would gather in the corner of the lobby and explain in detail how it was all done with magnets. Magnets were the mysterious thing you could do anything with. It never occurred to these people to have it done by magnets would be more difficult than to have the lady actually float.
I listened to these groups explaining the wonder and it was only on rare occasions that anyone ever suggested anything that was close to the facts. In the first place, facts were too simple and in the second place, the mind was conditioned away from the prosaic understanding of the matter. It was very amusing because I happened to know how it was done having been present on a number of occasions when the device was assembled. They did not realize how perfectly, how simply and how completely the human mind can be misdirected. Of course, incidentally, we may say there was the lunacy fringe that had decided the whole audience had been hypnotized. But the real answer was very simple, but very cleverly and intelligently worked out.
Also when I was younger than I am now, considerably, I lived in a small town where circuses went by. One year before these more recent devices, such as the radio, but not before the party line on the telephones which was the great method of communication at the turn of the century, everybody listened to everybody else, the deepest rut in the linoleum was in front of the phone. On this occasion an old, decrepit, dying, mangy lioness disappeared from one of the cages. In the following week the lioness was sighted in an area of over five hundred miles. It was seen anywhere from three to ten places at the same time. It frightened dozens of reputable, honest, God-fearing citizens, all of then solid citizens. Then the lioness showed up dead two hundred yards from the circus tent. It had ambled over there and fallen dead. Yet all of those who reported having seen it were honest, God-fearing people, which brings us to a simple fact that has been studied and analyzed for centuries, that is the delusion of masses.
Once a story starts it is almost impossible to determine how far it will go and how many variations it will assume before the journey is ended. Like interesting fragments of gossip it develops jet propulsion and also passes through innumerable transformations, so the final account has little resemblance to the original story. Knowing these tendencies of the human mind, these tendencies that are present in perfectly honest and honorable people, we have to approach all remarkable accounts, not in an effort to demonstrate how remarkable they are, but to discover, if possible some simple, natural, normal explanation, clinging to that until that explanation itself obviously falls. There are always levels of explanations ascending from the simple to the complex. We should carefully wear out every level, exhausting its most reasonable probabilities before we ascend to more rarefied strata of opinions.
Not long ago I was talking to a gentleman who had had a very bad moment, he had nearly killed a friend while out deer hunting. He told me the happiest moment of his life was the moment he realized he had missed him. But he said while he was aiming, while he was attempting to shoot what he believed to be the deer, which, of course, was obscured in the thicket, he would have taken an oath on any Bible and swear before God as a witness, that he actually believed he saw the deer. He saw movement, he saw movement in the underbrush, twig and branches took the actual appearance of antlers, and he was perfectly willing to swear that he saw the deer.
Now such visualization along lines of expectancy is not a new experience, and after a number of reports are circulated we have to recognize the possibility of such delusions. We must, however, bear in mind that the elements of delusion may not disprove the entire structure, but may account for certain difficulties which arrive later. I read an article recently on the flying saucers in which one researcher in the field was attempting to reconcile all the differences in the accounts, and trying to find an explanation large enough to include all the details of the various authentic statements. This was to my mind a mistake. These authentic details will probably never be completely reconciled when all the facts are known. It is not necessary for us to verify every tiny thread of the report. It is impossible. These very threads may be so tangled and so exaggerated and enlarged in the retelling, that they obscure rather than contribute to a general statement of facts. The facts will probably show that a great many honest reports were untrue and that many very simple and factual elements were completely overlooked.
I do not believe there is any use in attempting to explain away the existence of these flying saucers. Even had we not the most recent reports, such as that which appeared in the last issue of the Readers Digest, and even before that, probably a year ago when Winchell mentioned the flying saucers in his column, telling the people not to worry, it was a government secret, even without these statements that have never been disputed there is still evidence enough that there is something, or several somethings, that has been seen. Thus we may assume without any great exaggeration that something not previously generally considered is happening, and that there are basic truths under the stories of the flying saucers, that these truths like the levitation of the lady, have been explained very badly is also pretty evident, inasmuch as explanation utterly irreconcilable cannot all be right. Conversely, we can say they cannot all be wrong. That may also be possible, then again the truth may be a little different from all the reports, because it is hard to formulate reports where the necessary facts are not available.
But assuming for the moment that which I think we are entitled to assume without too much allowance for imagination, that something has been seen, and that the various reports about it like those matters in which they are in common agreement may have some validity, we are then confronted with the question of what we have seen. Nearly all accounts report several different things seen. Naturally, some of these accounts, including the flying cucumber, and the report of a great space ship that took fifteen minutes to float across the horizon, and reached from side to side of the visual heavens, might be suspected of exaggeration. These things get larger the longer we think about them, and like the famous fish story, they improve with the telling and with the enthusiasm of the narrator.
The various things seen and described can be classified into various groups; one group consisting of the flying saucer which is round, almost round, oblong, concave and convex. That various sizes have been noted, we know, some being of no great size, and others being of considerable proportion. Then something resembling the jet propulsion machine, either without wings, or with exceedingly thin, fin-like extensions, propelled by a tremendous power from what appeared to be gills on the sides, the whole structure shaped roughly like a cigar, have also been described by several persons. Detached floating lights that are seemingly under control have also been noted. Rays, beams and lights, and such phenomena, disassociated from any visible structure have been reported. These might, theoretically, represent the distortion due to the pressure of the excitement of seeing something, but as the reports gather and fall naturally into several classifications they are worthy of being given consideration in those classifications.
But we must consider the type of person testifying. Several witnesses have been of more than common integrity, they have been specialists in various fields, they have been experts in aerial physics, and things of that nature. We must also take into consideration the pressure of an enlarged legend and how this legend can bring with it a tendency toward the fulfillment of expectancy. No sooner had the mysterious missiles, or whatever they were, begun to accumulate as stories, then we began to have the same type of thing that we had in the story of the floating lady. We had a number of well-authenticated, well- documented forms of hysteria. Of course the milleniumists moved in immediately. This was a new indication of the end of the world and the Second Coming. I think that can be somewhat discounted. I do not believe the next Avatar will arrive on a flying saucer. In spite of the delinquencies of humanity I am also loath to believe we are apt to be wiped out by the wrath of the Almighty, or something of that nature. Not the wrath of the Almighty, but the stupidity of man, is causing most of the trouble. So those who used the flying saucer as a “Repent ye, the day is at hand” made quite a stir at the time and worked upon the level of thinking that has been so tormented in the past by such procedures as to be rather receptive to the most incredible beliefs. This would be equivalent to tying the floating lady to the Arabian Nights, and making it appear it could be justified that the magician is a fakir of India, or some other equally wonderful explanation.
The next question that arose was the possibility that the so- called flying saucers were a guided or propelled weapon, and that they were the result of experimental research in military armament. I imagine that if at any time since the flurry began Mr. Gallup had conducted a poll on public opinion, he would have found the idea that they were experimental research in arms was held by the majority of people, end to a degree this rather matter of fact attitude toward the subject would indicate that the mass mind is more calm and collected than any of the individual elements which compose it. If the flying saucer, the floating cigar, and the very highly stratified will-o’-the-wisp, if these were indications of armament projects, then naturally it would be difficult for the average citizen to pierce the protective wall which the government has placed around such research under prevailing world conditions.
I remember very well the flurry in Santa Fe and that area during the development of the atom bomb. Santa Fe is only a short distance from Los Alamos where so much of the research was carried on, and of course the cracker barrel congress was held in the lobby of the Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe. It was there the great physicists brushed elbows with the agents of espionage from various countries. It was there that detectives and secret service men were breathing down each other’s necks all the time. It was here also we had a factory for rumors that was almost out of this world. Everyone had the inside of it. Everyone had a friend who had a friend who was in the know. The stories, when the facts became known, were all of them wrong, but each one was strongly defended by a group of champions who are now ready to defend something else equally uncertain.
I remember one day while I was down there in that mountain country, something happened that almost belongs in the department, projects flying saucers. Out on a ranch there of several thousand acres, and standing on the side of a hill with the view extending from ten, twenty or thirty miles, I noticed one afternoon an extraordinary roar. It was far stronger and more powerful than the sound of any ordinary airplane motor, even a large transport or passenger plane. Suddenly without any warning whatever, this roaring took on the proportions of a definite vibration and some thing moved at an incredible rate passing almost directly over the place where I was standing. That it was moving very close to the ground was evidenced from the fact that pinion trees not more than ten feet high were bent half way to the ground. The thing passed in a fraction of a second, but I saw absolutely nothing although there was ample visibility for miles in the direction in which the sound seemed to fade out. What it was I have not the slightest idea, but I am quite certain it was not the Second Coming. The thought that came to mind was that it was a jet-propelled instrument of some kind, moving more rapidly than the human perception could follow, and by the time I could organize myself to look for it, it was gone. That almost certainly was the answer. It is also quite possible that the sound of the instrument, or whatever it was, was such that it actually was moving in the opposite direction from that which the sound seemed to be traveling, and in looking in one direction I failed to see it because it moved in the opposite direction. Anyway, nothing was visible, it left no track of any kind, no smoke or gas, there was a terrific roar as it moved over the ground, bending the trees and it was gone. Well, at that time what was going on in these research laboratories was not known to us, but it seemed almost certain that it was a high powered, possibly jet-propelled plane. I thought no more of it and said nothing about it until it came to my mind in connection with the project saucer. Almost certainly these things have an explanation in terms of the incredible advancements that have been made in scientific research in recent years.
Considering the next problem we have to bear in mind also the association between the concept of the flying saucer and the rapidly intensifying scientific-fiction literature which is getting more and more attention in the popular mind each year. This is like tying the story of the floating lady to the Mahatmas of India. It is a fortuitous circumstance that reality and fiction should exist at the same time which would incline thousands, possibly millions of people, to enlarge their sense of the possible and cause them confusion when trying to estimate the probabilities. We have become comparatively immune to such abstracts as interplanetary travel, we have become immune to the fantastic fortunes of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. We would not be surprised to see Superman float in our window at any minute; there might be a slight shook but nothing serious. We are being constantly conditioned by the pressure on one hand of a scientific fiction concept, and on the other hand by the quiet but intense findings of our great geophysicists and astrophysicists, and persons of that caliber. These groups seem to melt together and defend each other, but this defense is more of appearance than reality.
If we go beyond the second theory of the possibility of international armament, which we will come back to later, we come into the most delightful phase of the whole problem, and that is the problem of interplanetary or interworld communication. The reasonable and inevitable conclusion held by some as being demonstrable and the only adequate explanation is that the flying saucer is a space ship. Back to our illusion, there is no doubt in the world that the lady floats because of magnets. Obviously, there is no other explanation except the scientific theory. Now the space-ship idea appeals to a great many people but it has been my observation during the two and a half years I have been watching it, that it appeals to the wrong people; that is, it has appealed to a group of people who represent a level of worry, a group that is always present and always ready to be involved in such problems.
One of the interesting phases has been to draw Charles Fort and some of his opinions into it in an effort to prove that mysterious atmospheric visitors have been reported for more than two hundred years. Now, if that can be proved then we have a new equation to consider, but before we consider it seriously let us remember that not only were the aeronautical sciences inferior two hundred years ago to anything we have today — in fact unknown except to men like Leonardo — but the general approach to any phenomena was exceedingly inadequate. We have in the history of periods back to the beginning of time, reports of various things. Let us consider, for example, the accounts of comets. Scientific books, and books of pseudo-scientific interest, borderline theories, very often include tables of comets, in which the shape, form and appearance of comets are distinctly described. Some of them show as many as twenty forms of comets, each type in the form or shape of some familiar object, a comet exactly the shape of a sword with hilt and decoration, a comet exactly the shape of a snake with two eyes and a forked tongue, a comet exactly the shape of a crown with jewels set around it. These comets were claimed to have been seen, and one was reported in the form of a sword hanging over Jerusalem at the time of its fall, and a similar one was seen hanging over Mexico City at the time of Cortez.
Now I think we can safely say that in the experience of astronomy in the last two hundred years there have been no comets that exactly resembled swords. There are no comets that can be seen writhing away through the sky like snakes, and there are no comets that resemble physical articles so closely that the article itself seems to be floating there. So we must assume a considerable degree of interpretation. We can also find well authenticated accounts of sea-serpents, lake monsters, and within the last two hundred years quite a collection of very justifiable, authentic and conscientious descriptions of mermaids. These are not due to the desire to deceive, but it is believed that a certain type of penguin was mistaken at a distance for a mermaid. That is quite possible, although to me they look more like a groom at a wedding, but a dozen penguins standing an a piece of ice, just barely within the actual vision range of some old salt of the Seven Seas, suddenly developed long golden curls and started playing harps gesticulating wildly. These stories are not intentional fabrications, they are the result of the human mind looking for that which it expects, and taking a dim and uncertain form and clothing it in those expectations.
The problem of space navigation around this planet is one which remains as yet in the position of remote probability, nothing is impossible. We should be wise enough to realize that, and we should also be modest enough to recognize that other planets might have very well developed arts and sciences, far beyond our own accomplishments. At the same time we have incredible time factors. We have to begin to think of man or creature built machines that can go at the speed of light. We have to think of cosmic energy already controlled as a means of fuel. We have to further assume that the production of space ships on other planets, or other suns, or other planets revolving around other suns, would present innumerable difficulties. We have incredible difficulties, difficulties as to whether creatures of other worlds could even exist in the atmosphere of the earth, which would make it necessary for them to be protected by some special kind of device. We have already so completely embraced the concept of a trip to the moon that the first two or three journeys are already sold out and it will not be long until they will be subdividing with a slight additional charge for frontage facing the earth.
Some three, four or five years ago people believed so certainly that lost Lemuria was coming up near the coast of California that they even bought land that has not shown up yet. There is always someone to believe everything, but the problem of the space ship as a solution to the present dilemma should be held, it seems to me, as a last recourse to be considered only when every other explanation fails. It involves too much that is imponderable to us, too large an explanation for what we see and for what we have seen. It makes the tail of the kite much longer than the kite and gives us such a tremendous disorientation that we should consider it carefully. The concept, in fact, as far as can be discerned, landed on the public mind with a dull thud. It would be impossible to assume that we would have the present sense of complacency in the matter if we really believed that these ships navigated by intelligent creatures capable of building them were approaching and sailing around in good military formation, not alone entirely, but in bunches and clusters, without a definite reaction from the only group that could really estimate what it means, and that is, your scientific body.
The only person able to mentally envision even twenty-five per cent of the implication would be your physicists, astrophysicists and your researcher in the fields of cosmic energy and atomic power. These particular people are not apparently suffering from unnervement. They are not collapsing on street corners, they are not wandering around their homes absent-mindedly as though the sword of Damocles was hanging over their heads, they are not breaking up and falling to pieces under the nerve tension of it. In fact, from these distant, austere ivory towers there is a thundering silence. The wrong people are talking about space navigation. If there were a reasonable probability of these mysterious things actually being the spearhead of a possible “project earth” being carried on from elsewhere, this fact in itself would almost inevitably unite the earth in a common determination to devote every possible research of every nation to determining the aims, purposes and means available for such contact between this planet and another. We would have no more right to assume that such space visitors were friendly than we would have a right to assume they were unfriendly. If they exist and are capable of such methods of transportation they must be accepted as at least equal and possibly superior to ourselves in scientific accomplishment, because if they exist they got to us well before we had the means to get to them, which would indicate a very high degree of scientific knowledge.
That these strangers for some reason might scout the outer atmosphere of the planet is fantastic but conceivable, but that they should suddenly take such an interest in these matters, gives us time for pause. Either those in the best position to know do not believe that these mysterious projectiles come from the outer atmosphere, they do not believe they are space ships, or the whole group of them is the most idiotic combination ever recorded. They are stupid beyond concept if they believe or have any scientific evidence of penetration of our earth’s atmosphere from the outside and are still worrying about China, Korea, India, Russia, America, England or any other nation on the earth. If our experts are still pondering how to raise taxes, or lower the budget, or the politicians and statesmen of the world are still trying to cheat each other, in the presence of such a situation, then their imbecility is beyond calculation.
The least we should expect from those like Einstein, or other leaders In these fields, although they might be able to explain something created by another culture, is that they shall not be indifferent to its imponderables. If these people have information which they are not passing on to other leaders of the world, information that would unite the planet against a possible threat, if such things do not happen we must assume that those in a position to make them happen either know a great deal, or else are incapable of knowing anything. While there might be exceptions to both extremes it seems unlikely that we have a complete breakdown among all the leaders of our higher scientific and diplomatic life.
It would therefore appear that unless we see more interest in preparing the planet on the basis of a global concept that we are not much concerned about this possibility. You will remember the result at the beginning of the second world war of the actions and intentions of Hitler when his planes flew over France without dropping a bomb, until the people hardly expected anything to happen, then suddenly without warning a terrific bombardment began. The possibility that space ships floating in the earth’s atmosphere might be cruising about indefinitely for no reason is no better a possibility than that these are the spearhead of a project of some kind, and the earth, its people, its leaders and scientists, should either be unrolling the red carpet for friendly visitors, or else getting into a position for taking care of unfriendly ones. Neither procedure has been followed. Therefore, we can only assume that the space ship theory is interesting people who are interested in the scientific-fiction approach to life, but not those deeply concerned with the salvation of the planet. There seems to be no reason for the assumption, and no actual-proof, that these mysterious flying saucers and their retinues of other factors have to be explained as belonging to some other universe, or coming to us from out of space.
There is an ingenious belief that the explosion of the atom bomb here and the recent report of something that happened in the flash of an instant, purported to be an explosion on Mars, might be tied together, and that the investigation of the planet is due to the reports of such atomic phenomena which has been noted by the astronomers and physicists on another planet, but this again more or less undermines the idea that scientific-fiction writers have advanced, that this touring around the earth’s atmosphere has been going on long before the atomic bomb. The whole issue is a little too confused on these matters to require much further consideration along those lines. I think it is possible that some day there will be communication between planets, but we will have to make several very marked advances beyond even what we know as our atomic project before we will be ready to launch ourselves into the incredible vicissitudes of space, where we know with the highest concept of energy and power we possess today, that even presuming we had all the equipment necessary, the human being would not live long enough to make the trip there and back, even with very old age. That such things might happen on other planets where life might be different, where life may be longer and the problem of the rejuvenation of life has been accomplished, all this is possible, but where it means fifteen, twenty or twenty-five years of travel through space at an incredible speed, with fuel problems almost beyond estimation, traveling at a speed almost as great as that of light, we might be wise and look for something simpler, and only depend upon such a concept in an emergency. Where everything else fails we are forced to fall back on the miraculous as an explanation of the problem we face.
Now let us consider the problem that was originally advanced. and which has been more or less sustained by documentation and recent reports. We know that on various continents in secluded areas very elaborate experimental laboratories have been functioning for a number of years. We know that prior to the collapse of Germany the Germans were already pondering a number of ideas in relationship to the development of atomic armament, and fantastic, scientific dreams about the earth’s outer atmosphere. Many of these scientists survived the disastrous collapse of Hitler’s regime, and have disappeared behind the Iron Curtain. It is known with reasonable certainty at least a few of these scientist are now cooperating with the Russian atomic project. We also have every reason to believe that that project is situated in the great Mongoliain area in a little community called the State of Tanna-Tuva, where many of these laboratories are underground and where research in atomic missiles and in the delivery of these missiles is under consideration. There are almost certainly other such centers of this research which will account for the reports of jet- propelled rockets, or something of that nature that were seen in a considerable number over Sweden and other Scandinavian countries several years ago. There are other reports that Britain has experimental projects in Australia and Canada. There is every reason to believe that even France may be carrying on moderate work in one of her lesser known colonial possessions. We do not know exactly where, but we can well imagine they could do a lot of private work in Madagascar, where the inhabitants seldom leave their own country, and very few people go there. That the United States has an elaborate research project we know too well to even question it, because the reports that come out, little by little, are backed up by every indication that we actually lead the world in that type of research.
That all these nations are searching for certain means which include both missiles and the delivery of missiles, and undoubtedly include a number of other problems relating to matters of which we have no knowledge — and probably it is not good that we necessarily have knowledge if that knowledge can be of any comfort or assistance to a real or potential enemy — cannot be questioned. We know, for example, that we hear very little about the development of bacteriological warfare, yet there have been hints of research in that field, and from material that has come to my hands I do not think all of it is imagination. There has been a hint of pollutional warfare in which sources of, water can be so rapidly and definitely contaminated as to completely wipe out huge areas of civilian population. These things in themselves are very terrible to think about, very horrible to contemplate, but are still, apparently, the inevitable consequence of the materialistic trend of our way of life. We are dooming a great part of our own race to destruction by our own ingenuity. We have enough strength and resourcefulness to do this but we have not as yet sufficient greatness of heart and goodness of spirit to find constructive solutions to world problems. With the situation as it is we must realistically recognize a tremendous rise in atomic armament, a tremendous determination for one people to excel or exceed all others in the accomplishment of the instrument of offensive warfare.
There seems to be very good grounds for believing flying saucers are an experimental project in such warfare research. There has been some question as to where they came from. A recent opportunist film indicated they originated in Russia. I think probably that would cause Uncle Joe to have a broad smile under his mustache. I do not believe that is true. I think again it is the field of the unknown dramatized by the mystery of the Iron Curtain. We always wonder what someone is doing who is off in a corner where we cannot see him. It seldom interests us sufficiently to go over and explore, we simply sit down and wonder. The chances are if we go over we find him doing something just as useless as we would be doing under the same circumstances, probably nothing.
But with the conviction of Russia’s broad militaristic program, and the great chart or map of the Communist revolution dangling before our eyes, we are quite certain that with the various scientific minds that have been commandeered from other countries, the Russians could be well on their way toward the development of atomic science, and through spies, espionage and treason have most of our knowledge on the subject. Therefore it would seem possible to some that these missiles might be of Russian origin.
This presents us, however, with another problem. Problems multiply when we contemplate them. One is, what would cause the massing of these missiles over certain areas of our own country where they would be extremely remote from their source or origin. If these missiles were developed within the boundaries of the Soviet Union, even in Mongolia, they would have to cross Japan, or at least the great Pacific wastes, and finally come here, almost half way around the world. That such missiles traveling at such distances should be so completely controlled as to be able to move a little to the right or left when some airplane approaches them would be a little hard to believe in terms of guided missiles. That guided missiles might be brought within a reasonable scope of their objective, yes, but most of the reports of these projects indicate that the instrument was exceedingly sensitive in its reaction to almost any contact.
Well, we have again the dear old magnetic theories and other things to fall back on, but the fact seems to beg if the missiles were guided and came from another nation there would be a larger report of these disabled in various ways, disintegrated in mid air, or things of that nature. It at least offers an interesting thought, but it seems unlikely as a first choice that if these missiles contained living persons and are guided by crews, which might be possible with the larger ones, that they would be used experimentally by one nation on the opposite side of the earth from its own laboratory and expose them to a number of accidents which might dump them and their entire secret right into the lap of the enemy. Of course, there is the possibility of detonation equipment intended to destroy the instrument in case of disability. The possibility of such instruments themselves being destroyed when they become disabled brings up the problem of a crew that would have to bail out or die with it, and even if the crew died with it, there would be wreckage of some kind, so it would seem such an experiment would be carried on over an isolated area. That it should be so secret and so wonderful that no one is allowed to know anything about it, and yet to have the testing field on the opposite side of the earth presents too many technical difficulties to me.
Another consideration we have to face is, that for whatever espionage we have operating in countries dominated by the Soviet policy to have no way of determining the work going on there, this seems a little strange, and it also seems a little strange that absolutely no effort has been made by any of our equipped military forces to shoot down or attack any of them. Nothing has been done to pursue and investigate them. Where any effort has been made to contact them, it was instinctively on the part of some individual pilot who thought for a moment of trying to ram the disk or something of that nature. There is no program, as might be expected for those in authority being ordered to get hold of one of these disks. Even traveling at high speed over various areas a few potshots should have been taken at them. An alert could have been created, and still could be, by which some military emplacement would get a visible opportunity to turn anti-aircrafts on them, but no such thing has been done. Certainly a foreign country sending such instruments without our knowledge could not complain if we attacked and destroyed them. In some instances they have been reported as low as one thousand feet, in other instances as high as fifty, or twenty thousand feet, and at other places have been reported to be stationary for a considerable time. These reports indicate efforts could be made to bring them down if anyone wanted to do it.
There has gradually drifted out from the same sources a report that the facts about the saucers are known and those who apparently have the facts are not worried. I met one individual who has the facts, who was not talking. He did not tell me anything, but he was not collapsing from worries, in fact, he was playing bridge. Now with so heavy a cosmic secret as some folks would like to maintain, it does seem like he would have trumped his partner’s ace, but he was in good form. He was undoubtedly a member of the air intelligence and knew the answer.
The only conclusion that seems to be reasonable and carries a larger part of the story is that which is now beginning to drift to our contemplation, and that is that the flying saucers and the floating cigars are the products of our own research equipment, that the flying saucer is some type of research device, an experimental device for either defensive or offensive armament. It is the only practical explanation that exists. This explanation violates none of the essential facts of the matter. So prosaic an explanation should not immediately discourage us. There is every indication that the secret of the flying saucer will come to the public in the relatively near future, that the time of useful secrecy is nearly passed. Whatever it is we will know, and whatever knowledge we receive will be received with mixed emotions by those who have already thought about it. Some will accept it when the explanation comes, other will insist that the explanation is only a blind to cover up the fact that Venus, or Mars, or a Fixed Star has frightened us out of our wits. Actually, almost certainly the explanation will be the correct one.
Upon the point of explanation we can all speculate. Certainly I have no further enlightenment on it than anyone else has. If anyone really knows it would be his duty to refrain from any factual statement as long as the government or intelligence service desires that it should be that way, but without any prior knowledge, therefore without any restrictions of secrecy we can speculate within the bounds of the reasonable. Our speculations may be as false as any other, but there are things that apparently are necessary in armament today, and we may be right to assume that that which is necessary to the balancing of the efficiency of our modern defense program would be the logical direction in which research would be carried on. We would be plugging weaknesses in our defense structure and also plugging weaknesses in our offensive program if we have to carry a program of offense into another nation’s territory.
The one thing that seems to me to have been a weakness, up to the moment, in nearly all the defense programs, and the offensive programs of other nations, is in the ingenuity for the discovery of such incredible instruments as the atomic bomb, the hydrogen bomb, the bacteriological bomb and the pollutional bomb, the difficulty with all of them is delivery. The only way we have of delivering them at the moment is the old traditional forms. We can deliver them by controlled rockets, which, however, as was proved in the blitz on England was not effective directly and against which various defenses could be created. We can deliver them in high-powered, high-flying airplanes, in which one plane in a large convoy of planes carries the bomb, but against this we will find a rising tide of defense. No matter how far we extend the ceiling for anti-aircraft, the enemy can extend the anti-aircraft defense. We have the problem of trying to reach a destination with various kinds of material.
We also have another problem which relates to protection against types of armament, which we can well imagine will be developed in other countries, but about which our public knows nothing. This interval of efficiency between available means of accomplishing certain projects, and the more desirable means, could explain the problem of saucers. It could well represent a guided missile or an instrument with a living crew, capable of certain advantages in the delivery of armament, in the delivery of bombs, or the delivery of some forms of material. They could also definitely be useful in development of observation in the discovery and checking of the activities of an enemy. But their construction, their formation, the way they operate suggest they have one of several possibilities, either they are going to be used for the distribution of rays or some natural force that could be the focal point, possibly some means of short- circuiting motors, or affecting or attacking various mechanized devices. or they could be used for the delivery of bombs, they could control or pilot robots, and function upon larger instruments and give the nation that has them complete control over the air.
That this type of thinking should be consistent with the projects as we know them, and with the temper and thought of our times, would seem to suggest that this is the general direction. There is always a possibility they may represent an entirely new dimension of cosmic rays or the penetration of some principle of energy by which we could have very definite advantages. There is a discussion as to the possibility of these devices being radioactive. That situation has not been satisfactorily solved. There is the report that some are luminous, according to others, they appear to be either a silver light or white disk. Whatever they may be they are most certainly instruments for the defense of a land, or for the extending of the power of the military into the land of the occupied, and there is much to indicate the experimental work is being carried on in the United States.
The question as to why such experiments are permitted in areas with considerable habitation, where there is the possibility of one of these huge disks, some being two hundred and fifty feet in diameter, falling to the earth, injuring individuals, or destroying property, has caused a number of speculations against it being developed here. It seems we would be endangering our population in experimental research. Yet most accounts report these devices contain some means for their own annihilation. What this means is we are not aware. As far as I know no one has seen one of them disintegrate and break up. There has been no wreckage to speak of, although one or two have reported it. That the project may be in experimental stage and completely harmless is also a possibility. That it is extremely light, having the appearance of mass, but actually consisting of a small amount of any heavy material is suggested by the type of research. We have thought of it as containing motors and things of that type, but no report has been made that any such motor power has been used. It is possible the entire device in its experimental stage is completely harmless, and even if it should fall in a community would cause no more damage then a little consternation. We must therefore assume it is in an experimental stage and not equipped with whatever is intended to be used as a device of offense or defense.
That some of them are comparatively small might indicate they are involved in a new principle, either of motion or focus of energy of some kind. That they have practical utility is certain or else they would not be developed as a military project. These things have to pass very extreme groups of critics, scientists and research men before the army or navy would adopt them, and their utility must be demonstrated, or else a good probability of it, before the project begins. The project seems to have been running for several years, but is gradually emerging. The public mind does not seem to be unnecessarily anxious, and from everything indicated, the secret will soon be out.
But up to that time it is a very good example for those persons who wish to be thoughtful to assume the attributes, attitudes and policies of mature thinking, and show how intelligent human beings can approach the unknown, and also give those of a less stable and substantial type of mind an opportunity to control their own thinking and escape from a tendency toward the fantastic. If we approach these things reasonably we shall generally be right; whereas, if we approach them too dramatically we shall be wrong.
The device in all probability is some highly specialized scientific structure intended to advance research. The device itself may not be the project, but some means of testing for something else, but whether it is a means to an end, or is the end itself, it is almost certainly humanly guided, humanly devised, and is being advanced in the unfoldment of necessary research into the great and powerful potentials of the planet. Beyond that I think we shall simply have to wait until Uncle Sam decides to talk, and anyone who talks before that would be doing every one concerned a great unkindness.
In my opinion, flying saucers=government experimentation and possible tools for control.
THE CASE OF THE FLYING SAUCERS
by Manly Palmer Hall (33ø), July 2, 1950
